The surgeon opening up new experiences
Surgeon Gabriel Börner has developed a tool for effectively closing incisions after abdominal surgery. When he started the company and developed his innovation, he was surprised to find so much available support.
For just over a decade, Gabriel Börner has worked as an emergency surgeon at Helsingborg Hospital (Helsingborgs lasarett). As well as performing operations, he’s working on a dissertation at Lund University about developing – and evaluating – a device for closing the abdomen after an operation.
“It’s a type of sewing machine that reduces complications and shortens the time taken to close up the abdominal cavity.”
A small tool that can bring big savings
Gabriel’s research results show that the device – around the size of a stapler – is both quicker and more precise than the traditional method of sewing up the cavity by hand. It’s a technique that reduces the risk of wound infections and hernia formation for the patient and protects surgeons and nurses from sharp injuries.
There is a lot to be gained. It offers less risk to patients, greater safety for hospital staff, and lower costs for those who take care of the finances.
Help that moves businesses forward
Gabriel started up his business, Suturion. to develop the product and bring it to market. Help to move the project further came from the University’s innovation centre.
“I was pleasantly surprised how much support was available at the University,” he says. “With the new start-up, LU Holding helped us to control the direction we took.”
Building a business from the ground has been a completely new experience for Gabriel, and discovering his own strengths has been an exciting process.
“I had an idea, a concept,” he says, “and having a long-term plan has made it possible to overcome the obstacles that have sprung up along the way.“
