Here's what you should know and what investors look for.

Most startup companies need investment at some point in their journey, but a lot of companies struggle to find it. Investors come in many shapes and at different times of the journey, from perhaps early investors like family and friends to business angels and later-stage venture capital. It is not one-size-fits-all, so make sure to consider what is the best-suited way for your company. Regardless of what type of investor you are aiming for: here are a few tips on how to increase your chances to get an investment for your startup!

What most investors look for

Team 

The investor wants to make sure that their money will be well-managed by an A-team made up of the right composition. 

Uniqueness

Investors look for a competitive advantage in the market. The fewer direct competitors operating in the space, the better. So what makes your company unique? Make them care about your case. 

Scalability and payback

Demonstrate that there’s a big market for what you’re selling and that their potential return is high. 

Show, don’t tell

They’ll want to see evidence and quantified data to back up what you tell them. 

Timing

Why are you seeking investment now? Any trends arising that will gain your company? Internally, why is this a good timing to take on investors? 

Strategy

How are you planning on using the money you’re asking for?  


What type of investor should I look for?

Insights in your industry

It might be harder to find, but it’s probably worth it. The investor can not only bring value in terms of money but also provide other value like contacts, input, etc. It’s a “give and take”-relationship. 

Shared vision and understanding

When getting investment you’re likely giving up parts of your company’s equity and parts of your influence. Make sure that the investor shares your perspective on the goal of the company.       

Connections

Getting the right connections might make the whole difference for your company, check what networks and communities your potential investors are connected to.
