Innovation in research environments

A couple of the Business Developers at LU Innovation are working integrated at Lund University's Strategic Research Areas (SRA). These Business Developers have their main base placed in these environments.

In 2010, a program was launched to promote innovation at Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC). The main goal was to increase the interest of innovation and production from one of Lund University's Strategic Research Areas. The program ended in 2013, but since the project has been successful the university decided to continue this venture and make it a part of the regular innovation system, and to expand it to include additional SRA.

Making an Impact from within the Research Center

With a Business Developer working closely integrated in the research environments we can work more strategically to impact cultures and processes within the research units, and at the same time, identify new ideas in the early stages. The aim is to create a greater awareness of innovation potential and to develop a steady flow of new, commercially viable projects.

By being present at the research center we can increase the understanding and interest in collaborating with the industry, and researchers can be encouraged to contact LU Innovation spontaneously and bring new ideas and projects in for evaluation.

Encourage Projects to grow

The creation of new businesses based on basic medical research takes time. Therefore, a project must be able to grow and mature before it can attract funding. This is due to the high risk-taking and long development processes associated with these projects. By working integrated into the research environment and allowing the projects to grow, we reduce the risks before the projects are presented to potential project funding.
